Amel and Rob were neighbours when they first met. They knew they were going to get married, so when Amel’s dad started to pressure her to go back home after finishing her studies, they decided to officially do it. Rob proposed in a zoo near the cage of mooses dresses in a moose costume (he calls Amel moose due to her clumsiness). She thought it was hilarious and very cute.
Amel and Rob had their wedding ceremony at the registry, Amel was getting ready at the hotel opposite, just before the change of the guard. They were married on 31st of August 2013 in Windsor and had a big reception in Marrakech too.
Wedding Planning Obstacles
It was casi impossible to have most Amel’s family and friends to come to London due to visa and expenses and the same for Rob’s family and friends to come to Morocco. It’s definitely harder to plan a wedding when couples are from different faiths/cultures etc. Everything is different and it creates unfortunately a lot of tensions and disagreements but we love each other and had to sacrifice a few things.
We both wanted something very different we wanted our guests to enjoy and remember our wedding so we were lucky in that sense to agree on this point. We chose to have a very British wedding in Windsor on a boat featuring english tea time and a big party in a magnificent house in Marrakech which described very well both our cultures.
Advice to other multicultural couples
I would say that it is hard to find love so they shouldn’t let culture differences create problems between them. They have to come in the middle and meet each other rather than let one culture dominate as 1 person in the couple will be sad and at the end it will destroy the relationship and ultimately the love.
After the ceremony we went to the Long Walk and castle to take photos. They had got masks of the Royal Family to put on for fun- exotic for foreigners- we did groups then the couple. But the taxi had gone by the time we were supposed to get back to the guests. – hence the hitch hiking photo. Fortunately the best man- inkilt- managed to get us another one.
The reception was on a boat, high tea, very British.
Most of her family from North Africa couldn’t come- some of her family lives in France so it was easier, so they hired a grand villa in Marrakesh to do the party.
