Today we have Jon and Courtney’s Catholic rustic orange grove wedding. The ceremony took place at Saint Matthew Catholic Church, Winter Haven FL, followed by the reception at the Bride’s private family property. It’s so nice that Courtney had always wanted to have her wedding where she grew up and even better that her dream and envision came true! We have the photographer and bride’s view on their wedding and this beautiful wedding film.

Catholic Rustic Orange Grove WeddingSeptember 5, 2014
Spoiler alert… this video is a tear jerker! Friends and family are always a big part of a couple’s wedding day, and Cali residents Courtney and Jon were not short of people who poured their hearts out.
They had a beautiful Catholic ceremony, held in a quaint town in the middle of historic Florida, followed by a relaxing pre-reception party and reception dinner that looked like something straight out of deep-woods Georgia in the summer. Spanish moss hung with lights from a beautiful white tent, loads of food made with love from family members and beautifully peachy-pink saturated freshly-picked flowers decorated the tables set with antique-style dishes and silverware.
I have always dreamed of having my wedding at the home where I grew up. To this day, it remains one of my most favorite places in the whole world. As a little girl, I envisioned getting married in our church (conveniently located less than a mile away) and having the reception under a tent on the lake at my parents’ home. I dreamed that the day would be full of laughter and dancing and great food and love! This was truly a dream come true for me.
When it came to a theme for the wedding, I allowed the location to dictate the direction we would take. Since we were getting married in central Florida, “Rustic Orange Grove” took over as the obvious choice! As a little girl, I had envisioned all of the pictures I would want to take to document the day and this place. My photographer, Dustin Prickett from Sunglow Photography, toured the property and instantly saw my vision! It was truly a match made in heaven! He even thanked me for picking him to shoot our big day. What a great guy, right!?!? Betsy Hansen from Hundreds of Moments brought a team of three to capture our wedding on video. This was not even something that I had originally wanted, but what a difference it made to our day. You don’t think about the little moments, the things you won’t see, the speeches, all that you will want to relive again and again! The video and photos are truly like a time capsule for us to relive the day for the rest of our lives.
I was lucky enough to marry a cute drummer, so the one part of the wedding that I allocated completely to him was music! He did an amazing job! We ended up having three live bands perform for our special day! First, was a family friend and incredibly talented, Marcus Brixa, and his jazz quartet. They highlighted our cocktail hour with jazz favorites and some more recent crowd pleasers like Steely Dan’s “Josie” (that they even allowed my husband to jump in and play drums on). For dancing, we had Band Haven. They are a local cover band in our area, and were a total blast! They even learned “our song”, so we could dance to “You Make My Dreams Come True” for our first dance! Lastly, Band Haven was kind enough to allow my groom and his friends play their instruments during one of their breaks, and Southern California’s premier Red Hot Chili Pepper Cover Band showed up on Winter Haven’s doorstep. The Green Mild Pepperoncinis rocked the house! Dancing is absolutely one of our favorite activities, and the music made our day!
For details, my mom was incredible! She worked tirelessly for a year making all of the accents that truly brought my visions to life. She created ceramic heart napkin rings, decorated hundreds of mason jars, cooked homemade dog biscuits, and became an expert in all things burlap! We worked with a local florist, Philip Burkhart, to rent mismatched China and silverware for the place settings, and he utilized the idea book we created for him to make flower arrangements that were exactly to my specifications.
If there is any advice I could give a bride for her big day, this would be it! If you know exactly what you want, be sure to communicate that with your vendors. Thanks to dreaming of this day for my whole life, I had very specific ideas of what I wanted. Delivering pictures, outlines, descriptions, and having pre-event meetings with vendors made a huge difference in the dream becoming a reality.
Having the wedding of my dreams was truly incredible. I could not be more grateful to the friends, family, and vendors who helped make it a reality. If you have the opportunity to get married at home, consider it. Our wedding had more of a feeling of love and community than any other wedding I have ever attended. All of our friends pitched in and were able to feel like this was something that they helped create. What better way to start a marriage than with the full support of all of the ones that you love? A wedding is a day, but a marriage is a lifetime; and Jon and I are grateful to have such an incredible support system to take the journey with us!
