Wedding Planning Timeline

Congratulations you’re engaged! So what next? I mean how are you meant to know when you haven’t planned a wedding before. If you’re in need of a wedding planning timeline, here’s just the thing. Each point can be amended to what suits you. If you want to book your hen do earlier than 3 months, then you do it. If you want to plan your honeymoon 6 months before the day then it’s entirely up to you. Here’s a rough timeline to help plan your big day.

One you’re engaged

  • Set a date for the wedding
  • Decide on a budget and your main priorities.
  • Figure out who will be paying for what
  • Book the venue for the ceremony and meet with the person who will be marrying you
  • Book the reception venue
  • Book the caterer and discuss food and drink
  • Book the entertainment

  • Order wedding stationery
  • Book the photographer
  • And videographer if you’re having one
  • Pick your wedding party
  • Start looking at wedding outfits for inspiration
  • Meet with your florist to discuss flowers

Nine – six months before the day

  • Book your MUA and hair stylist – although this should be done as early as possible
  • Send out your save the dates
  • Start to plan your honeymoon
  • Arrange wedding transport
  • Order the wedding cake
  • Research local accommodation for guests travelling from far

Three months before the day

  • Register for wedding gifts
  • Buy your wedding rings
  • Run through the form of your wedding service. This includes choosing your music, readings and/or meeting with the person who is marrying you: pundit, minister
  • Arrange formalwear for the wedding guys
  • Finalise your honeymoon plans
  • Invitations should be sent out 8-10 weeks before the big day, 6 weeks before is the latest they should be sent out
  • When replies come in, make a list of who will be attending
  • If you’re giving your wedding party gifts, consider buying these now
  • Wedding insurance is a must and here’s why
  • Plan your hen do with your bridesmaids and friends

One month before the day

  • Give your ushers instructions of their responsibilities on the day
  • Confirm all arrangements for the reception, catering, entertainment, transport and with any other suppliers
  • Check final number of guests and confirm the seating plans
  • Have your final fittings for your dress if necessary and try on your entire outfit with shoes, jewellery, etc
  • Ensure the best man knows what his duties are

One week before

  • Remind your fiancé to write their speech and write your own if you want to make one too
  • Make your final confirmations with your reception venue and caterer, photographer, florist etc
  • Ensure everyone knows where they need to deliver goods and have contact details for you
  • Wear in your wedding shoes to avoid blisters on the day!
  • Have a final try on of your dress
  • Grant your bridesmaids their responsibilities

On the day

On the day of your wedding ensure that you have no jobs to do yourself as your time should be spent getting ready and enjoying your big day.

This Wedding Notes (Journal) from Antonia Swinson is a great wedding planning book. I bought a copy for one of my best friends when she got engaged and she was so surprised and amazed with the level of detail within the book. It comes with a number of ideas, planning advice, suggestions, traditions regarding your big day.
